Intersex Asia is so excited to share the joy of the recent community gathering hosted by our wonderful partner network, Intersex.Id, from July 17 to July 19 in Indonesia! The “Workshop on the Establishment of Interseks Indonesia” was a new beginning and a fantastic milestone for the Intersex community in Indonesia. Brought together around 12 Intersex activists, the workshop aimed to provide an opportunity to learn, connect, and raise awareness about important intersex issues across Indonesia.
The Trials and Tribulations of Intersex Lives in Indonesia
Throughout the event, participants openly discussed the unique challenges they face in Indonesia—ranging from societal misconceptions and stigma to difficulties accessing appropriate healthcare, navigating complicated legal landscapes, and even social discrimination. Intersex people may face exclusion, bullying, or pressure to hide their identity, which deeply impacts mental health and well-being. Additionally, legal systems in many countries, including Indonesia, do not adequately recognize intersex individuals, often restricting them to binary gender categories and lacking protections against discrimination. These challenges, although not new, remain critical in understanding the situation the intersex community faces in the country and in forming the baseline for future movement.
Personal Journeys and Cultivating Closeness
The shared challenges can form a common understanding, but what connected all participants was their personal journeys and reflections. As they connected over their common aspirations for intersex rights and representation, meaningful friendships formed and blossomed. The atmosphere during those three days was vibrant and uplifting, underscoring the power of collective action within a supportive community. This encouraging environment not only strengthened their resolve but also set the stage for future initiatives aimed at advancing intersex rights in Indonesia.

Intersex Asia and the Path Ahead for Intersex ID in Indonesia.
As we move ahead, we’re excited to continue supporting our wonderful partner network, Intersex ID, along with the intersex community in Indonesia and beyond. Our dedication goes beyond mere support; we aim to actively collaborate on initiatives that promote awareness, understanding, and acceptance of intersex individuals. This workshop is only the first of our support, and also a new beginning for Intersex ID as well as the intersex community in Indonesia. After the workshop, a roadmap was roughly chalked out, including 1) the development of educational materials into the local language to ensure accessibility, ensuring that vital information reaches out to diverse communities effectively; 2) organizing sensitization meetings wih LGBTQ and civil society organizations to foster understanding and allyship 3) Strengthen the skills and capabilities of the founder member of Intersex Id, recognizing the vital role in advocating for Intersex Individuals.
