Museum of Transology celebrates its 10th anniversary. The Museum of Transology is celebrating 10 amazing years of preserving trans, intersex, and non-binary stories. The museum was built on the grounds of combating the erasure of trans people from history: “Never again will the records of our lives be written by the media that spectacularise us, the legal systems that criminalise and the psychiatrists who pathologise us.”

Uni of Leeds publishes research on making the curriculum more trans and non-binary inclusive. Leeds’ Medical School is adapting its curriculum to “develop a university-wide culture which promotes equality and inclusion”. It aims to ensure the “advancement of gender equality”, allowing for “representation, progression and success for all”. The university also published research that questions: “Why is your medical curriculum straight?” It suggests medical students should learn about “non-traditional pregnancies” and “diverse family structures”.

Slovakia: Proposed constitutional amendments would crush the rights of LGBTIQ+ people and be a backward step for gender equality. Amendments to the Constitution of Slovakia to recognize only two sexes (male and female) and limit adoption to only married heterosexual couples would have a devastating impact on the rights of LGBTIQ+ people, said Amnesty International ahead of an expected debate and vote in the Slovak parliament.

Hungary bans public LGBTQ+ events, protests erupt. The Hungarian parliament has approved a package of constitutional amendments that include a ban on LGBTQ+ events and provides a constitutional basis for denying recognition to transgender and intersex identities. The amendment was approved by the parliament with 140 votes in favor and 21 against and also allows the use of facial recognition to track and fine participants.

Intersex people in Ireland suffer “poor mental health”, new report finds. A newly published report by Trinity College Dublin, in partnership with Belong To and Intersex Ireland, has revealed a deeply concerning mental health crisis among intersex people living in Ireland. The report analyses responses from 31 individuals who identified as intersex and uncovers high levels of psychological distress across a number of indicators. Despite the limited sample size, the findings are stark and echo similar patterns seen in international studies.

Biologists at Hungarian Academy of Sciences say it is not true that “a person is either male or female”. By a 92 percent majority, Hungary’s 38 leading biologists have adopted a resolution setting out scientific arguments for why the statement included in the Fundamental Law by the governing parties is inaccurate. “A non-negligible proportion of people are born and/or develop with chromosomal or anatomical characteristics that do not clearly correspond to the traditional definition of ‘male’ or ‘female, ’” they say.

Dublin City Unniversity hosts major international Intersex Studies conference. This month, Dublin City University hosted Intersex Insights: Heritage, Visibility and Recognition, a two-day conference dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary conversations on intersex studies and variations of sex characteristics (VSC). The event took place on 9 and 10 June 9th and was led by Dr Marta Prandelli as the final output of CHRISALIS, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship funded by the European Union.

New Zealand First Bill defining ‘Woman’ and ‘Man’ in law a step backwards. A Member’s Bill introduced by New Zealand First to legally define the biological definition of a woman and a man has been condemned by non-binary intersex advocate Tu Chapman. The Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill seeks to legally define a “woman” as “an adult human biological female” and a “man” as “an adult human biological male.” Chapman says defining men and women as biological absolutes marginalises certain sectors of society, such as intersex and non-binary.

Stony Brook University and Gender Equality New York Hosts Queer Artist Expo for Transgender Day of Visibility. On Monday, March 31, Stony Brook University’s LGBTQ* Services and Gender Equality New York (GENY) hosted a vibrant queer artist expo in celebration of Transgender Day of Visibility. Pieces ranged from whimsical miniature paper-mache octopuses to life-sized abstract art paintings emblazoned with daisies. The artists behind the pieces smiled tenderly and eagerly engaged with curious attendees. Additionally, spoken personal word poetry and heartfelt musical performances touching on the lived experiences of transgender artists occurred throughout the night.

Leaders and LGBTQ+ communities alike have come together to creatively protest the new law banning the display of certain flags in schools and other “government property”, including Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, who introduced three new “official” city flags. They incorporate the existing Salt Lake City flag design into new iterations that celebrate LGBTQ+ pride, trans pride, and Juneteenth.
