Intersex Asia has launched an innovative and collaborative initiative known as the Community of Practice (CoP). This vital platform is designed to bring together intersex activists, healthcare professionals, and the intersex community, all to tackle the unique challenges regarding intersex health in Asia and human rights across the region’s diverse landscapes.
Purpose: Advancing Intersex Human Rights and Bodily Autonomy
The overall purpose of this CoP initiative is to foster a nurturing environment that encourages the sharing of knowledge, resources, and personal experiences between the intersex community, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders. By establishing a dedicated platform for open and honest dialogue about intersex-affirmative healthcare, intersex individuals, activists, and healthcare professionals can engage in deep, meaningful discussions aimed at improving the health and rights of intersex individuals, while empowering them to devise practical strategies that promote inclusivity and bodily autonomy.
Through these collective actions, we aim to create a more equitable approach to intersex health services in Asia that are specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of the intersex community, ensuring that their voices are heard and their intersex human rights are upheld.
A Collaborative Effort: Formal Launch of the Community of Practice
The Intersex Asia Community of Practice (CoP) was officially launched on March 26, 2026, during its inaugural meeting, which gathered 15 participants, including healthcare professionals and intersex community members. This meeting marked the beginning of the long-term collaborative initiative focused on improving healthcare for intersex individuals in the region. Participants engaged in lively discussions about the CoP’s vision, strategic approaches, and plans, highlighting the crucial role of community input in shaping its objectives.
A few outcomes were achieved through this first official meeting, including (1) the Terms of Reference (ToR), which will serve as the foundation for the CoP’s operations, defining the roles, responsibilities, and expectations for all members involved; and (2) the intersex care guideline, which builds on existing documents developed by medical professionals to ensure the standard of care provided by healthcare practitioners are informed by community experiences; and lastly, (3) the adoption of a fluid, non-hierarchical structure that promotes collaboration and adaptability, allowing it to respond effectively to the evolving needs of its members.
Next Steps: Scaling Inclusive Healthcare Practices Across Asia
Moving forward, the Community of Practice (CoP) has outlined several key next steps, starting with the finalization of the Terms of Reference (ToR) to sign on and formalize their commitment to the initiative officially.
