Celebrating Intersex Awareness Month and the Intersex Coming Out Day, we sat down with our Executive Director, Hiker Chiu for a small talk about the current state of the intersex movement in Asia, and the direction moving forward.
- It’s great to have you today, Hiker. Could you share a little about the current state of the intersex movement in Asia, and how we are, as a regional organization, addressing the needs and rights of intersex individuals in the region?
For so long, the intersex community has been invisible and mistreated due to a lack of understanding. In the past 6 years, we and other activists in the region worked tirelessly to increase visibility. In fact, visibility is still one of Intersex Asia’s priorities. To advocate for the rights of intersex people, we first need to prove that our community exists and is not just a myth. However, the more we work, the more we realize that this lack of understanding is not only limited in society, doctors, and families but also in the intersex individuals themselves. The question now arises: “How are we going to advocate for acceptance when we haven’t fully understood ourselves?”
The journey of intersex people to understand themselves is like finding the way out of a maze. It’s long, hard and confusing. They should receive support rather than discrimination. The support from family and allies is critical, forming the collective strength to not only help intersex individuals recognize their identities but also form a space where they can thrive without the constraints of societal norms.
As a regional organization, Intersex Asia commits to building a supporting network across Asia, where we can first prioritize awareness through data and research, then nurture and strengthen the community so they can stand up for themselves and for others.
- What message would you like to express to parents of Intersex Children, acknowledging the vital and transformative role they fulfill in shaping our society?
In this context, the call to action is unmistakably clear: intersex families must come together as a cohesive unit, embracing the unique identities of intersex individuals while actively challenging societal norms that aim to confine and restrict them. Regardless of who you are, a mother, father, brother and sister, even cousin, aunt, uncle…, you are the first human rights activists for your intersex family members. You play a vital role in shaping the lives of your family members. The change and the love start at home! Family’s role in shaping society’s perspective toward intersex individuals is critical.
- What is the way forward for Intersex Asia to promote the rights and well-being of Intersex individuals across the region?
Looking ahead, our vision remains steadfast—a commitment to fostering an equal and just world where every Intersex individual has the right to live without fear or stigma. This is done through advancing regional efforts, including:
- Fostering understanding about ourselves, our journey, and our needs to find a collective voice for all intersex individuals. Baseline information about intersexuality needs to be standardized to encourage support from society.
- Building partnerships with other movements to further amplify the voices of intersex across communities and channels.
- Working with policymakers and government officials to advocate for a better legal framework for the intersex community.
By working together collectively, we can challenge existing biases, dismantle systemic barriers, and cultivate environments that affirm the dignity of every person. This collaborative approach aims to elevate voices that have often been marginalized and ensure that every individual is empowered to pursue their identity freely and authentically.
- As an Intersex Activist and Executive Director of Intersex Asia, what do you want to convey to the Intersex community members, who are striving for recognition and equality in society?
I believe it is important for intersex community members to embark on a journey of self-acceptance, embracing their unique identities and diverse experiences. By fostering a strong sense of empowerment, individuals can collectively advocate for their rights within society. This empowerment not only enhances self-esteem but also equips community members with the courage to challenge societal norms and injustices. Through unity and resilience, they can strive for greater visibility and understanding while pushing for legal protections that affirm their dignity and worth. By standing up for themselves and collaborating with allies, they can seek justice and equal treatment, contributing to a broader societal change that respects and honors diversity in all forms.
- What is your message to the donors, funders, and stakeholders who play a crucial role in your mission?
I would like to urge stakeholders and allies to extend their support to Intersex Asia in our ongoing struggle for intersex rights. Your backing is essential in advocating for the recognition, protection, and advancement of the rights of intersex individuals. Together, we can create a more inclusive society that respects and upholds the dignity of all people, regardless of their intersex status. By standing with us, you are contributing to a vital movement dedicated to justice, equality, and human rights for everyone within the intersex community. Let us collaborate effectively to ensure that our efforts yield meaningful change and foster a brighter future for intersex individuals everywhere.
