On October 25, 2024, the eve of Intersex Awareness Day, Intersex Asia hosted a memorable webinar that spotlighted the launch of eight country reports from the Southeast Asian Region (Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam) and also fostered critical discussions on the role of research in challenging harmful narratives and advocating for the rights of intersex individuals. More than 30 participants from varied backgrounds including intersex activists, researchers, CSOs, and academicians attended the webinar.

The Impact of Research on Intersex Rights

The key theme discussed during the webinar was the impact of research as a powerful tool for advocacy. Participants explored how well-conducted research can illuminate the human rights violations faced by intersex individuals and serve as a foundation for legal and social change. In her opening remarks, Hiker Chiue- Intersex Asia’s Executive Director highlighted the pioneering effort of Intersex Asia in launching the research initiative of the organization. Jeff Cagandahan, Intersex Asia’s Co-Chair, emphasized this point, stating, “Research is essential in creating a positive narrative around intersex bodies. It underscores the normalcy and validity of intersex variation.” This perspective highlights the transformative potential of research in shifting societal attitudes, fostering acceptance, and providing evidence for advocacy efforts.

Additionally, community-led research methodologies were another critical aspect raised in the webinar, ensuring the community representation in data. Research should centre on the voices and experiences of intersex individuals, ensuring their active participation in shaping both the research agenda and its dissemination. This approach enhances the findings’ relevance and empowers intersex communities to advocate for their rights effectively.

Terminology and Pathologization

The discussion also tackled the challenges posed by pathologizing language often used in medical contexts. The continued use of medicalized terms contributes to stigma and can hinder access to rights for intersex individuals. Nada Chaiyjit, Co-founder of Intersex Thailand and author of the Thailand country report, pointed out that “the conflation of intersex with transgender identities further complicates advocacy efforts, obscuring the unique needs and experiences of intersex people.” This highlights the necessity for clear, respectful language that accurately reflects intersex identities without framing them as pathological.

Challenges Faced by Intersex Activists

The webinar highlighted several challenges that intersex activists face across different contexts, particularly in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. These include a lack of awareness about intersex issues, which leads to erasure and inadequate legal protections. Additionally, participants noted that stigma and discrimination create an environment where intersex individuals often feel marginalized even within broader LGBTQ+ communities.

Opportunities for Advocacy

Despite these challenges, there are significant opportunities for advancing intersex rights. The growing momentum of intersex activism is leading to increased visibility and understanding of intersex issues. Tata (Co-founder, Kolektif Interseks) stressed the significance of collaboration with supportive medical practitioners, which can facilitate better healthcare access for intersex individuals. However, this often occurs within the constraints of existing gender binaries.

Nicole Fong (Author of the Malaysian country report) and Edith (Author of the Indonesian country report) highlighted the importance of engaging National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and regional mechanisms to advocate for legal reforms that protect intersex rights. Furthermore, utilizing media and cultural platforms can challenge harmful stereotypes while promoting positive representations of intersex people.

Moving Forward

As we look to the future, it is vital to prioritize community-led research initiatives that amplify intersex voices. Advocating for human rights-based language while eliminating pathologizing terminology in medical and legal frameworks will be crucial steps toward fostering acceptance and understanding.

Working collaboratively with key stakeholders—including government agencies, medical professionals, and religious leaders—will enhance efforts to promote awareness and acceptance of intersex variations. By strengthening regional and international networks, activists can share knowledge and resources that bolster advocacy efforts across Southeast Asia. The webinar underscored the essential role that research and advocacy play in addressing the myriad challenges faced by intersex individuals in Asia. By fostering collaborative efforts among diverse stakeholders, we can work towards a more inclusive society where intersex individuals are recognized, respected, and celebrated for their unique identities.
