Intersex Asia (IA) has been working to support and empower intersex communities at the grassroots level, working tirelessly to advance the human rights of Intersex communities. Our organization plays a crucial role in promoting awareness, education, and advocacy for intersex people’s issues, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights are protected.
Although it is not unexpected, the recent policy changes by U.S. President Trump not only deny the existence of intersex individuals but also cut off our original funding by suspending its Global Aid fund. This development is undoubtedly a significant setback for IA and our intersex human rights advocacy movement. Similarly, we are witnessing comparable political shifts in other governments who are the back donors of our grants, which have also impacted our organizational operations.
Over the previous years, Intersex Asia has pioneered several critical initiatives, including using Research to inform and strengthen advocacy movements, Community-building programs that foster solidarity and support among intersex individuals, and emergency support systems designed to safeguard intersex lives in times of crisis. Our significant work;
- Last year, IA released the legal report of 12 Asian countries, highlighting the challenges intersex individuals are facing, one of which is the lack of sufficient resources.
- We have also nurtured a new generation of intersex activists across Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and the Philippines over the past six years with the hope of creating an inclusive environment for intersex people.
- Our emergency fund has supported more than 15 intersex individuals with medical needs or natural disasters. These initiatives are not just about survival—they are about empowering intersex communities to thrive and lead dignified lives.
Now, due to the funding cut as a result of Trump’s order, not only will Intersex Asia face serious risks of significantly reducing or stopping these crucial works, but community people will be the ones who are most affected.
Hiker Chiu, an Intersex Activist and Executive Director of Intersex Asia says: “Regardless of the intersex identity denying and funding challenges we encounter, IA remains committed to supporting the intersex community and strengthening the intersex movement across Asia in alignment with our vision and mission. Intersex exists, Intersex people are real; Intersex rights are human rights, no one can deny that.”
Intersex Asia appeals to our Donors/Funders for the ongoing support. Sustained funding is crucial for Intersex Asia to maintain and enhance our efforts in advocating for the rights of Intersex Individuals. With your valued contributions, we can implement our new vibrating strategic plan, and continue our initiatives/ work in several key areas in this year 2025;
- Conducting comprehensive research on Intersex related issues (For example, Mental health issues, Stigma, Discrimination, etc.) is essential for understanding and addressing their unique challenges.
- Implementing Capacity Building Initiatives aimed at empowering Intersex Individuals, particularly young activists, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to effect meaningful change
- Conducting advocacy efforts throughout the region, with a particular focus on the Philippines, where we strive to support intersex children diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH).
