Taiwan – 12 August,

As a new member of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) for the POP program, I had the privilege of attending the IAC meeting in Amsterdam from July 31 to August 3, 2024, which coincided with the vibrant Canal Parade, celebrating LGBTQI pride. This event was not only a gathering of minds but also a powerful platform for connection and advocacy, giving me a sense of purpose and optimism for the future intersex movement.

Looking back at the progress

During the meeting, we reviewed the achievements of the POP program over the past three and a half years. Reports from organizations like PAL, ILGA Asia, and COC highlighted significant strides made in promoting intersex rights and addressing issues of sexual exploitation and harassment within partner organizations. With the newly elected leadership for the committee, bringing together voices from Africa and Asia, the discussions were rich with insights, as we collectively assessed previous efforts while identifying areas for future work.

“It’s very impressive that POP program really respect the value and knowledge from the grassroot organizations. It support groups or organizations that are not able to register due to LGBTQ people are criminalized, giving opportunity for them to support community people without any space and support to survive.” Hiker Chiu shared.

Our engagement didn’t stop in the meeting. The visit to the COC office and the participation in Canal Parade on August 3 was a celebration of visibility and solidarity and essential to remind ourselves of the struggle and triumphs that have shaped the LGBTQI movement.

Connecting with the Global South movement

This meeting was not merely an advisory session; it was a unique opportunity to connect with and learn from movements in the Global South. The exchange of ideas and experiences with fellow activists from various countries reinforced the notion that our movement are interconnected. The support we receive through the POP program, particularly for initiatives like CFC Nepal and Intersex Philippines, is vital for fostering growth and resilience within the intersex community.

The POP program empowers us to forge meaningful partnerships that amplify our voices and strengthen our advocacy. As we navigate the challenge and fighting for intersex rights, collaboration with diverse organizations is essential to challenge discrimination and promote inclusivity. Together, we can create a future where intersex individuals are recognized, respected, and supported in every aspect of their lives” – Hiker Chiu, Executive, Intersex Asia.

As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded of the importance of collaboration and the role we all play in advancing intersex rights on a global scale. The connections forged in Amsterdam will undoubtedly propel our movement forward, opening new avenues for partnerships and advocacy. Together, we can amplify the voices of intersex individuals and ensure that their rights are recognized and upheld in the global conversation.
